The Government of India has temporarily restricted access to Telegram across the country until June 22, 2026. The decision was announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) based on recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA) ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination. Authorities stated that Telegram was being misused by organized groups involved in exam-related fraud and the circulation of fake question papers. The restriction was imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
Why Was Telegram Restricted?
According to government agencies, several Telegram channels and groups were allegedly being used to spread fake NEET question papers, scam students, and manipulate exam-related information. The temporary restriction aims to reduce the risk of further misuse during the re-examination period.
Why Many People Oppose This Decision
Critics argue that Telegram is only a communication platform and should not be blamed entirely for the actions of a few bad actors. Millions of students, professionals, businesses, content creators, and communities use Telegram daily for legitimate purposes. Opponents believe that targeting specific channels, groups, or individuals would have been more effective than restricting the entire platform.
Experts also point out that people spreading leaked content can easily move to other platforms such as WhatsApp, Signal, Discord, or other messaging services. Therefore, simply restricting Telegram may not solve the root cause of exam paper leaks.
What Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Said
"India's IT ministry banned Telegram for one week because some users shared leaked exam questions. This punishes 150M+ ordinary Telegram users while those responsible simply move to other apps."
Telegram founder Pavel Durov criticized the decision, stating that the restriction affects more than 150 million users in India while failing to stop the actual offenders. He argued that those involved in leaks can easily switch to other communication platforms.

Who Announced the Restriction?

ଅନେକ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ମତରେ ଟେଲିଗ୍ରାମ କେବଳ ଏକ ଯୋଗାଯୋଗ ମାଧ୍ୟମ। କିଛି ଅପରାଧୀଙ୍କ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ ପାଇଁ ସମଗ୍ର ପ୍ଲାଟଫର୍ମକୁ ଦଣ୍ଡିତ କରିବା ଉଚିତ୍ ନୁହେଁ। ଲକ୍ଷ ଲକ୍ଷ ଛାତ୍ରଛାତ୍ରୀ, ବ୍ୟବସାୟୀ, କଣ୍ଟେଣ୍ଟ କ୍ରିଏଟର ଏବଂ ସାଧାରଣ ଉପଭୋକ୍ତା ଦୈନିକ ଭାବରେ ଟେଲିଗ୍ରାମ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରୁଛନ୍ତି।
ବିଶେଷଜ୍ଞମାନେ କହୁଛନ୍ତି ଯେ ଯଦି ଟେଲିଗ୍ରାମ ବନ୍ଦ ହୁଏ, ତେବେ ଅପରାଧୀମାନେ WhatsApp, Signal, Discord କିମ୍ବା ଅନ୍ୟ ମେସେଜିଂ ଆପ୍କୁ ଚାଲିଯିବେ। ତେଣୁ କେବଳ ଟେଲିଗ୍ରାମକୁ ବନ୍ଦ କରିବା ମୂଳ ସମସ୍ୟାର ସମାଧାନ ନୁହେଁ।
